Since the 1930s, breastfeeding discussions have been a conduit for anxiety about women’s autonomy, malnutrition, child psychological development, and chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in newborns and children. Recently, work on the long-term adverse health outcomes for intermittently, or never, breastfed adults, born in the developed north as well as countries in the south, has taken on a central place in research on breastfeeding and NCDs.¹ Over the last two decades, a body of published work in leading journals has traced links between NCDs and various forms of inadequate breastfeeding, including research into cancers, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and respiratory diseases –
