Cesare Magati (1579-1647) and Flaminio Rota (1555-1611): Medical diatribes in the early 17th century (2024)

unapi

Cesare Magati (1579-1647) in 1597 obtained the degree in Medicine and Philosophy at the University of Bologna. Before turning to practice, he deemed it useful to spend some time in Rome at the Hospital of S. Maria della Consolazione. Though being a follower of the galenic ipse dixit which was still taught in Universities, he began to consider a new way to see and interpret things. He is remembered in the history of medicine mainly for his innovative method of treating wounds. Magati's method was not immediately welcomed by his colleagues, still linked to Galenic medicine. The paper analyzes an exchange of letters between Magati and Flaminio Rota (1555-1611) dated 1610. The latter is considered the former's teacher during his studies in Bologna. The discussion topic is how Magati dressed a soldier's head wound, a method that Rota contested. The dispute that flares up between the two highlights a generational clash that even casts doubt on the existence of a previous teacher-student relationship between the two doctors in question.
