Von Grubenpferden und Blauen Reitern 100 Jahre Stadt Penzberg – Kohle und Kunst (Of pit ponies and “Der Blaue Reiter” Penzberg celebrates 100 years of coal and art) (2020)

In the Ruhr and other major mining districts, heavy industry quickly made its mark on regions that had originally been devoted to agriculture. As nature was forced into retreat, chimneys, headframes and spoil tips sprang up. The result was an industrial landscape to perpetuate stereotypes in the public eye, even after the last of the collieries had closed. Developments in Upper Bavaria were quite different. The “Blaue Land” south of Munich is a popular holiday region with an idyllic pre-alpine landscape of mountains, meadows and lakes. The Pfaffenwinkel region is replete with churches, monasteries and sensational views; since the end of the 19th century, its landscapes, agriculture, people and architecture have provided the subject matter for visual artists. There is nothing to remind the visitor of the coal mines that appeared in the 16th century and only shut down some 50 years ago. Although the industry left the landscape largely unchanged, it had given rise to mining towns with their own collieries. Taking the example of Penzberg, which received its town charter a hundred years ago (in 1919, during the time of the Weimar Republic), the paper offers insights into one aspect of bituminous coal (“pitch coal”) mining in Upper Bavaria, with reference to the works of the painter Heinrich Campendonk which were produced here.
