Si la production scientifique francophone en histoire de la construction est à la fois ancienne et de qualité, elle restait dispersée, mal connue des praticiens du bâtiment et des travaux publics, peu reconnue par l'académisme anglophone. Au moment où la discipline se structure au niveau international et se développe dans les principaux pays européens, il manquait ce vaste panorama qui souligne la diversité des approches disciplinaires d'un champ où se croise l'archéologie, l'architecture, les sciences sociales, l'ingénierie, la mécanique, le droit, l'art, la littérature... Issu du Premier Congrès francophone d'histoire de la construction qui s'est déroulé à Paris en juin 2008, cet ouvrage, conçu comme outil pour les recherches à venir, contribuera à faire émerger sur la scène des savoirs une discipline «entre un artifice pensé et un édifice matériel» qui témoigne ici d'un remarquable renouveau.
