Throughout the history of Western America, the key to sustained development has always been the ability to store water. Water is the basic resource required for all human activity, and in many regions, it is utilized for power and irrigation, as well as for domestic purposes. Unfortunately, precipitation in the West can be extremely intermittent, and some means of storing water for future use is essential fbr any kind of long term economic endeavor. This paper discusses the Mountain Dell Dam near Salt Lake City, Utah, an early reinforced concrete multiple arch dam, and places it within the context of its designer's career. In addition, the basic structural concepts used in multiple arch dam design are explained and a comparison is made with the two other types of dams considered by the Salt Lake City Engineer's Office for the Mountain Dell dam site.
