Inteligência de sinais no Estado Novo: ciência e tecnologia aplicadas à intercepção telefônica (2020)

unapi

[English translation by DeepL.com: The aim of this research is to analyze the transit of knowledge on signals intelligence, with a focus on telephone interception, used by the Brazilian political police structured from the 1930 Revolution onwards, during the first government of President Getúlio Vargas. In view of the lack of supporting documents, the participation of academia and foreign police and intelligence agencies in the transit of this knowledge has not been demonstrated. The research focused on two hypotheses, the analysis of which is directed at documents located in public and private archives. The first is that the knowledge of telephone interception was passed on from the battlefields of the First World War in Europe and transmitted by the French Military Mission to the Brazilian Army, which passed it on to the political police in the 1930s. The second is that telephone companies collaborated with the political police, as demonstrated by criminal case 4057, located in the Public Archives of Rio Grande do Sul.]
