[Abstract translated by Google Translate: This is the abstract in English… Antonio Stoppani (Lecco, 1824 - Milan, 1891) was a religious open to liberal ideas, a patriot, a professor of geology at the University of Pavia, then at the Higher Technical Institute of Milan, then at the Institute of higher studies in Florence, and finally back to Milan, where he also directed the Civic Museum of Natural History. An internationally renowned geologist, paleontologist, man of letters, a member of the Accademia della Crusca, a biblical exegete committed to the pacification between Church and State and to the reconciliation between science and faith, Stoppani is known to the general public especially as the author of the "Bel Paese," a masterpiece of scientific popularization published in 1876. The "Bel Paese" is the third book by number of editions produced in the nineteenth century and, starting from the fifth edition, it was adopted as a textbook in schools. This favored the diffusion of the work and increased its popularity; in 1931, the book reached one hundred and fifty editions and was then continuously re-edited until the fifties. After the success achieved by the author during his life and in the first decades of the twentieth century, in the second half of the century he and his work were substantially neglected by critics. This volume intends to reread and critically re-evaluate the works that best express Stoppani's literary vocation, taking care, however, not to separate what the author made to dialogue and cooperate - that is, science and literature, convinced as he was that scientific knowledge and humanistic knowledge converge towards a single truth.]
