Hauptbeschreibung War der „Cocain“-Forscher Sigmund Freud ein wissenschaftlicher Scharlatan, ein Genie oder keines von beiden? Dieses Buch beantwortet klassische Fragen der Freudforschung, indem es Freud in seinen zeitgenössischen wissenschaftlichen Kontext ‚reintegriert‘. Die dabei entstehende Geschichte handelt von der Erforschung des Arzneimittels „Cocain“ von ihren Anfängen bis ins 20. Jahrhundert hinein, von Freuds zentraler Rolle im Rahmen dieser (psycho-)pharmakologischen Forschung und von den therapeutischen Behandlungsversuchen mit „Cocain“ an Morphinsüchtigen, die europäische Anstaltsärzte in Folge von Freuds Anregungen in den 1880er-Jahren durchgeführt haben. Diese erkenntnisreiche Erzählung widmet sich jedoch nicht nur dem Schicksal der daraus hervorgegangenen „Morphio-Cocainisten“, sondern trägt auch zur Klärung von zentralen wissenschaftshistorischen und -philosophischen Fragen bei. Zudem wird u. a. exem[-]plarisch enthüllt, welche Formen die klinische Forschung im 19. Jahrhundert annehmen konnte.
