During the reform movements of the 1960s, aspirations for humanistic autonomy in German pedagogy clashed against the turn toward empirical research methods. “Cybernetic pedagogy” was an attempt to solve this problem. Its integrative approach sought to satisfy both scientific technical demands as well as humanistic holistic ones. In particular, the connection between humanistic anthropology and functionalist cybernetics constituted an important factor of success. This article is intended as a contribution toward clarifying the connection between cybernetics and pedagogy as it became established in the German discourse about “learning” (by cybernetic scientists such as Hermann Schmidt, Helmar Frank, and Felix von Cube). The article explores the question of how cybernetic pedagogy sought to objectify and optimize “learning” more efficiently, setting out from the tension between humanism and techno-scientific rationalism. It is shown how precisely in the reception of anthropological criticism a rethinking began to occur about the relation between quantification and qualification.
