Human racial classification can be numbered among the most conspicuous scientific fiascos ever. Many racial catalogs have been proposed across the centuries, but each of them is inconsistent with all other catalogs. The study of human genomes is now showing us why. As already proposed by Frank Livingstone in the Sixties, human genome diversity has proved to be continuous across the geographical space; genetic variances among members of the same population exceed by far the variances between different populations. Because of these factors, lines separating different groups on the map are largely arbitrary. Although a large number of papers, especially clinical papers from the US, still makes use of racial definitions, genomics has demonstrated that characterizing people on racial grounds has no objective basis and is useless in all conceivable applications to medicine and pharmacology.
