Within his system of disciplinary divisions, Charles de Bovelles presents medicine as deeply rooted in philosophy insofar as knowledge is concerned, while its institutional role in the university curriculum is placed between theology and law. The specific position that medicine occupies in this framework also depends on the type of good that each discipline is supposed to deliver to humankind. Medicine deals with the good of the body, while theology and law take care of, respectively, the good of the soul and material goods. This article investigates Bovelles' ideas regarding medicine and anatomy, focusing in particular on the anatomy of the heart - which, according to Bovelle, is both a literal and metaphorical reality.
