Un tirocinio nella bottega di un barbiere o in un ospedale? Questi i percorsi pratici per diventare chirurgo nella Lombardia austriaca di metà Settecento. Giovanni Alessandro Brambilla scelse la seconda opzione. Dopo alcuni anni di servizio nell’Ospedale San Matteo di Pavia, si arruolò nell’esercito asburgico, sperimentando nella durezza delle campagne militari le sofferenze dei soldati e l’inesperienza dei chirurghi. Brambilla, dopo una brillante carriera nei ranghi, diventò un personaggio influente, chirurgo personale dell’Imperatore Giuseppe II e in grado di influenzare il sistema della sanità militare austriaca. A Pavia, nell’Archivio Storico Civico è conservato un manoscritto inedito dettato da Brambilla nei suoi ultimi anni e che ripercorre le tappe della sua vita, dedicata alla professione medica. Presso il Museo per la Storia dell’Università, inoltre, si conserva una collezione di strumenti chirurgici, progettata da Brambilla per istruire i praticanti e inviata in dono alla scuola pavese intorno al 1786, per essere utilizzata dal celebre anatomista e chirurgo Antonio Scarpa. Questo libro descrive gli oltre cinquecento strumenti, suddividendoli in base agli interventi di riferimento.
