Claude Perrault (1613-1688) was famous both in France and elsewhere as an architect, and not as well known for his research in physics and medicine. Moreover, his work designing machines is still quite unknown. And yet, in the well–known translation of Vitruvius’s De Architectura, as well as in a treatise on mechanics – published posthumously by his brother Charles –, Perrault proved his familiarity with the engineering challenges of his time, for which he offered innovative solutions. Machines for calculating or for pulling or lifting weights, tools for making anchor cables, and bridge design techniques are just some examples of Perrault’s engineering insights. He always presented the latter accompanied by an extensive set of instructions, which are an invaluable source in reconstructing the technical knowledge of the period. This essay will, therefore, analyse his inventions and contextualize them in a historical period during which a growing convergence of science and technology was beginning to attach great importance to the production of machines.
