Das 1843 offiziell gegründete Naturhistorische Museum in Hamburg ist eine Einrichtung der Superlative: Bis zu seiner Zerstörung 1943 galt es als zweitgrößtes Naturkundemuseum in Deutschland. Zugleich ist es eines der ältesten, dessen Wurzeln bis in das 17. Jahrhundert reichen. Aufgrund internationaler Handelsbeziehungen entwickelte sich die Stadt Hamburg im 18. und im 19. Jahrhundert zum Drehkreuz für Naturalien aus aller Welt. Man ging meeresbiologischen, fischereiwirtschaftlichen und umweltbezogenen Fragestellungen nach, beteiligte sich an Expeditionen, sammelte und forschte weltweit. Bei seiner Eröffnung besaß das Museum 500.000 Objekte – heute über zehn Millionen. Damit zählt es zu den Top Five in Deutschland. Die meeresbiologischen Sammlungen des Hauses gehören zu den bedeutendsten in Europa.
