The St. Clair Tunnel: A Triumph of Canadian Engineering (1995)

The St. Clair (River) Tunnel linking Sarnia, Ontario, with Port Huron, Michigan, was the first full-sized subaqueous tunnel built in North America. The Chief Engineer of the St. Clair Tunnel, Joseph Hobson (1834-1917), a native of Guelph, Ontario, successfully combined three distinct and significant new technologies for this project—a steel tunneling shield driven by hydraulic rams, a cast-iron tunnel lining, and a compressed air environment. Most of the engineers, managers, contractors, and suppliers associated with the project were Canadian.
