Attraverso la ricognizione delle principali forme di naturalismo del Rinascimento, l’analisi dei molteplici significati del termine "natura" nell’età che va da Cartesio a Vico e la chiarificazione della problematica aperta dalla matematizzazione galileiana della natura e dalla nascita della nuova fisica, le pagine di questo volume intendono portare un contributo a una più ampia e approfondita conoscenza della modernità. Esse mettono in evidenza come il concetto di natura, elaborato sulla linea di confine tra metafisica e fisica, per le sue connessioni e ramificazioni costituisca il luogo teorico in cui si delineano una serie di problematiche di notevole rilievo: l’alternativa tra spiritualismo e materialismo, le implicazioni della tesi secondo la quale l’uomo è parte della natura, il destino della religione, l’esigenza di una ragione aperta alla complessità dell’esperienza. Il lavoro è stato svolto con l’intento di contribuire alla diffusione di una sempre maggiore consapevolezza del legame che stringe l’uomo al resto della natura al fine di evitare che sia trasformato, come è stato efficacemente scritto, "in un sovrano, assiso, anziché su un trono, su un mucchio di macerie (o di spazzatura) in attesa di una tragica soluzione finale."
