Ihr Buch Silent Spring (Der stumme Frühling), 1962 veröffentlicht, rüttelte die Welt auf: Sie machte darin auf den maßlosen Gebrauch von Pestiziden aufmerksam – und auf dessen Folgen. Die Naturschutzbewegung politisierte sich in der Folge und neue Umweltbewegungen wurden gegründet. Dabei war sie eigentlich Meeresbiologin und hatte bereits mehrere Bücher über das Leben im und am Meer geschrieben – in einer einzigartigen Kombination von Wissenschaft und Poesie. Dank Carsons außergewöhnlichem Gespür für Naturbeobachtung und ihrem schriftstellerischen Talent waren diese zu Bestsellern geworden und hatten die junge Naturwissenschaftlerin landesweit bekannt gemacht. Rachel Carsons ökologisches Denken fand in Der stumme Frühling eine praktische Umsetzung. Es gilt bis heute als 'Zündfunke der weltweiten Umweltbewegung' (Süddeutsche Zeitung).
