[Abstract translated by DeepL Translator: This is the abstract in English… This volume reconstructs some salient stages of Alfred Russel Wallace's (1823-1913) thinking, placing it "between Darwin and Spencer" within the mid-nineteenth-century British evolutionary debate. Although he is considered the "co-discoverer" of the mechanism of natural selection, for which he shares authorship with Darwin, Wallace differs significantly from the latter and embraces a comprehensive view of evolutionary processes that is influenced by the positions taken by Spencer on issues of evolution understood as "progress." Thus, through Spencerian philosophy transits, in Wallace's theories, conceptual elements incompatible with essential aspects of Darwinian doctrines, and first and foremost with the incidence that randomness plays in them in its multifarious meanings.]
