[he project for a "Memorial Book of railway workers who died as a result of repression during the Second World War" brings together several research projects and works launched by both the SNCF and railway workers' associations, with the aim of paying tribute to the victims by making them better known. In the field of the history of the Second World War, it complements the "memorial books" that were built by S. Klarsfeld for the Jews of France, by various orders and institutes (Compagnons de la Libération) and by several local authorities. The book brings together the biographical records of all SNCF agents, employees or former agents and employees who died as a result of the repressive measures of the occupier or the Vichy government, regardless of the method of their execution or death: shot after conviction, executed hostages, died before trial in prisons, shot or massacred, died in deportation or very shortly after their return. The research extended from 2012 to 2016. More than 2,500 people were identified and their stories studied; another 3,500 were verified from sources that were mostly unpublished and used together for the first time. A long introduction of 200 pages, actually a small essay, puts this colossal work in perspective in the archive and gives the keys to understanding this unique book.] (Amazon)
