Bien que centrales dans nos vies dont elles sont des conditions absolues d'existence, les plantes ont tres peu occupe l'esprit des philosophes classiques. Depuis quelques annees, cependant, l'etude des plantes revele des processus inconnus de communication, de reproduction, de regeneration, pour n'en citer que quelques-uns, qui nous invitent a repenser la vie, la mort, l'individu, l'espece, voire l'intelligence ou la conscience que certains appliquent de plus en plus ouvertement aux vegetaux. Plus qu'une critique sterile de l'anthropomorphisme et de l'universalisme reducteurs, une philosophie du vegetal est un veritable moteur pour la creation de nouvelles formes intellectuelles et pour reflechir les enjeux technoscientifiques, environnementaux et ethiques de notre rapport a la nature. Sans dessiner une ligne directrice unique, ce volume contribue a elargir un nouveau champ d'interrogations et de recherches. Ce volume reunit les textes d'un botaniste, d'une geneticienne des populations vegetales, d'historiens de la botanique et de philosophes qui, tous, pensent que la philosophie peut etre utile a la botanique, et reciproquement.
