Die 1901 gegründete Deutsche Gesellschaft für Geschichte der Medizin, Naturwissenschaft und Technik (DGGMNT) begann schon in den ersten Jahren ihres Bestehens, sich selbst zu historisieren. Anlass dafür boten die runden Jubiläen der Jahre 1926 oder 1951 sowie die Geburtstage des langjährigen Vorsitzenden der Gesellschaft, Karl Sudhoff. Insbesondere die rasch legendär gewordene Gründungsgeschichte der DGGMNT wurde häufig nacherzählt und sollte der Gesellschaft Identität und Legitimation verleihen. In Krisen- und Umbruchsituationen wurde diese Meistererzählung stets mit der Mahnung verbunden, das Erbe der Gründerväter nicht zu verspielen und die Kontinuität der Vereinigung zu bewahren. Der ritualisierte Rekurs auf die Vergangenheit diente der Selbstvergewisserung des Faches und seiner Vertreter. Die erinnerungspolitische Funktion der Fachhistorie war dabei stets wichtiger als die kritische Reflexion der Vergangenheit. Dies gilt auch für die Phase der Rekonstituierung der DGGMNT nach 1945, bei der die Traditionspflege erneut eine wichtige Rolle spielte. Selbstkritik, etwa im Hinblick auf die Anpassung der Gesellschaft an den Nationalsozialismus, blieb in der frühen Nachkriegszeit eine Seltenheit.
