[Abstract translated by Google Translate: This is the abstract in English… The Po, Italy's longest and largest river, with the tributaries of the Alps and the Apennines, has built up the Po Plain over the centuries, a land where today a large part of Italian agricultural production is concentrated. The most productive areas today are the "lowlands" ("bassa"), once swamps and marshes, where rivers rambled at will. Here, human effort has over time been able to tame their waters with fragile earth banks and to drain the "wetlands" with canalizations to obtain arable land. This book focuses on a historical period, between 1450 and 1620, during which the greatest effort was made by men, technicians, owners and governments to transform "lowlands" into meadows, rice fields and wheat lands. Inhospitable places were transformed into an immense "construction site" to create arable land and new agricultural settlements. At the center of the narrative is the fatigue of thousands of farmers, investments and conflicts of interest between states and communities who united and divided technicians, owners and governments on both sides of the river.]
