Adventures in aeronautical design : the life of Hilda M. Lyon (2020)

unapi

This is the first full biography of the life and work of Hilda Margaret Lyon, a talented mathematician and aeronautical designer. She was not ‘merely’ a trailblazing woman in engineering at a time when women were not expected to be engineers, but also a technical pioneer, respected in her field. She contributed significant technological advances during the early days of aviation. Hilda Lyon helped design the ill-fated R101 airship at the massive Cardington airship sheds, studied in the USA and pre-war Germany before becoming one of the select band of female scientific civil servants at the Royal Aircraft Establishment. She worked to ensure the safety of aeroplanes and submarines in the Second World War. In her own lifetime she was well known for her analytical expertise but now, some 70 years after her untimely death, her story is only just beginning to re-emerge onto the public arena. She was a remarkable Yorkshirewoman and a significant engineer, deserving of more widespread recognition today. (Amazon)
