Tests of the wrought- and cast-iron components of the 1859 Aldrich Change Bridge, the oldest surviving metal bridge built to cross the Erie Canal, show that the metal is sound and has strength comparable to the best iron made in the United States at the time the bridge was built. Comparison with calculated maximum loads in the truss structure shows adequate factors of safety. However, corrosion within threaded joints of wrought-iron members has reduced the strength of some connections within the truss system. The cast-iron members have suffered little from corrosion, but their exposed position in the bridge trusses left them vulnerable to mechanical damage.
