Melchor Almagro San Martín (1882-1947), escritor, periodista, historiador y diplomático, y el más joven de los cofrades del Avellano, deja Granada a finales del XIX para continuar sus estudios universitarios en Madrid, donde establecerá fecundas relaciones con algunas de las figuras intelectuales de la época, entre las cuales gozará de un gran predicamento. Biografía del 1900 (1943), libro escrito a partir de sus diarios de juventud por encargo de la Revista de Occidente, conjuga, en una prosa amena y fluida, el género netamente autobiográfico con el de la petite histoire, o historia de la vida cotidiana. La obra, de enorme éxito en la época, pone de relieve de manera vivida y luminosa los días de aquel crucial momento de entre-siglos.
