The spaces in which human intervention has been defined, ever since antiquity, when it comes to the control and management of water can be distinguished in several different functional ambits: forms of collection, conservation and distribution of the resource of rainwater in particular urban ecosystems, such as rupestrian sites, take on particular and peculiar forms. In the Matera area, and generally in similar geomorphological situations, rupestrian sites undergo, through time, site transformations that gradually define more or less complex layouts and structures, with complex and multi-functional cave dwellings, chambers for animals, production facilities, and places of worship. On top of these, there are systems for controlling flowing water, public structures for storing foodstuffs and water, fruit and vegetable plots, gardens, streets, alleyways, and terracing: this physiognomy will constitute a clear topographical marker in the medieval rupestrian settlement. In the framework of the larger CHORA Project – Archaeology Workshops in Basilicata, directed by the School for Specialization in the Archaeological Heritage at Matera (DiCEM Unibas), the issue of the rupestrian site was addressed as part of the DARHEM Project, also considering, among other aspects, the aspect concerning systems for the collection and use of water as a resource, and the “shape” that these systems have left in the medieval landscape of Matera.
