Surveying Manuscripts Digitization Maps; atlases Bavaria (Germany) Stang, Matthäus Vogel, Christoph

The state survey of Palatinate Neuburg in Bavaria provided the occasion for the production of some of the finest manuscript maps of the Renaissance era. Between 1579 and 1605 the whole of the Palatinate was surveyed and described in 1,400 manuscript pages of text. More than 400 manuscript maps and sketch maps were created, for the most part by the Lutheran priest Christoph Vogel (1554–1608) working in close collaboration with the Neuburg cartographer Mattaeus Stang (fl. 1597–1640) in the period of only eight years. A detailed analysis of these unique early-modern maps is now possible thanks to the publication of the text of the state survey and the recent digitization of the maps.
