Jacob Estey, the Estey Organ Company and the Harmonious Town of Brattleboro, Vermont (2019)

unapi

Organically derived mill villages that grew within the borders of a larger community, rarely conceived as part of a corporate strategy, were built in response to unanticipated market growth, geographic factors, and the need to provide a decent quality of life for workers. An outstanding successful example of this model was the experience of the Estey Organ Company, a manufacturer of melodeons, reed organs, and pipe organs, located in Brattleboro, Vermont. This paper is the unique story of the evolution of Estey Organ Company, its impact on the town of Brattleboro, and the creation of its mill village called Esteyville as it grew into one of the largest organ manufacturers in the United States. The paper describes the steps taken by Estey as he placed the imprint of his business on the town of Brattleboro in the 1870s, as he consolidated his business on a hill overlooking Brattleboro center, and as he built an industrial complex that included an industrial village. This is followed by a description of several of the unique features of the Estey experience that contributed to the linking of his business to town interests. Finally, the paper ends with an interpretation of Estey’s principles of mill community development, a concise explanation of what happened to the company after his death and commentary on the state of his complex today.
