Bir şeyi “iyi” yahut “kötü” yapan hangi ölçüttür ve bu ölçütü koyan kimdir? Akıl mı, Tanrı mı, tabiat mı, duygular mı? Bu sorular, insanlığın varoluşundan beri vardı ve varolmaya hep devam edecek. Peki, filozoflar bu sorular hakkında ne demişlerdir? Elinizdeki kitap, ilkçağ ve ortaçağın zirve düşünürleri Aristoteles ve Fârâbî’nin, ahlâkın kaynağı problemine verdikleri cevabı konu edinmekte ve tartışmaktadır.İlkçağ Yunan filozoflarından Aristoteles (ö. 322 MÖ), ahlâkın kaynağı problemine akıl ekseninde bir cevap ortaya koymuştur. Aristoteles’in ahlâk eserlerinden haberdar olan ve onun düşüncesini benimsemekle beraber onu geliştiren Fârâbî (ö. 950) ise, akıl ve ilahi vahyi mezceden bir çözüm geliştirmiştir. Her iki filozofun da ahlâkın kaynağı problemine dair cevaplarını mukayeseli olarak ele almayı amaçlayan bu çalışmada, teorik akıl, pratik akıl, siyasi ve dini otorite üçgeninden oluşan bir çerçeve çizilmiştir. Buna göre, genel ahlâki ilke ve önermelerin kaynağı olarak teorik akıl ile teorik akıl kaynaklı ilkeleri tekil önermelere dönüştüren kaynak olarak pratik akıl ele alınmıştır. Teorik ve pratik yetkinliği elde edemeyen bireyler için ise ahlâkın kaynağı olarak siyasi ve dini otoritenin işlevine dikkat çekilmiştir.
