After an introduction on eighteenth century insurance policies in German states, particularly on the two most famous institutions in the principality of Hanover and the kingdom of Prussia, Euler's contribution is examined in reference to the former institute where he was involved in the criticism put forward by Augustin Kritter. This is followed by an analysis of the unedited memoir by Lagrange, in reference to the latter institute, in which Lagrange, following Euler's deterministic approach and using the mortality tables available in the mid eighteenth century, demonstrated that the advantage was always on the part of the insured party, and as a consequence he predicted the institute's bankruptcy. Two other memoirs by Lagrange on insurance policies and political arithmetic are examined, as well as his correspondences with d'Alembert and Laplace concerning the debate on the foundations of the calculus of probabilities. The work closes with a description, in relation to these themes, of Lagrange's reports for the Institut de France and the works included in his valuable private library.
