Leibniz a contribue a forger les notions d'organisme et de corps organique. Le modele qu'il elabore a l'oree des Lumieres suscitera adaptations et metamorphoses et servira de ferments aux theories proto-biologiques. Christian Wolff, mais aussi Louis Bourguet, developpant les implications du mecanisme organique, repensent des elements cles de la science du vivant. Maupertuis, Buffon et Needham s'inspirent de la doctrine des monades pour rendre compte de l'organisation vitale et des lois de la generation. Determinant l'irritabilite et la sensibilite comme proprietes de la vie organique et de la vie animale, Haller postule un cadre leibnizien pour les hypotheses que lui inspire l'harmonie preetablie. Charles Bonnet developpe ces hypotheses en systeme et elabore les premisses d'une monadologie physiologique. L'empreinte du modele leibnizien se manifeste aussi chez Michael Christoph Hanov, createur du vocable biologie, reformulant les principes leibniziens-wolffiens pour les ajuster a l'epigenese des corps organises. Issues plus indirectement de ce meme modele, surgissent des theories d'inspiration vitaliste qu'illustrent aussi bien les philosophies de Diderot et de Jean-Claude de la Metherie, que les physiologies de Blumenbach et de Kielmeyer. Avec la theorie kantienne des etres organises se devoile une ultime incarnation de cette physique speciale vouee a l'organisme, que Leibniz faisait reposer conjointement sur la causalite efficiente et la finalite.
