Early Chinese traditional buildings used straight roofs. Reviewing the origin of the curved roof,most domestic and foreign scholars have started from historical,practical and aesthetic perspectives. However,they have not demonstrated how static force impacted upon curved roofs. By using static force analysis,this paper compares the forces on the roof curve and the catenary curve as well as curved roofs and straight roofs,especially the effects of the sliding forces. The comparisons illustrate the advantage of the curved roof,and confirm that the roof shape of traditional Chinese wooden buildings developed from straight to curved.
