Double star astronomy effectively began in the first half of the 19th century. After some sparse contributions from some forerunners, the first systematic double star survey, covering the northern hemisphere, was carried out by Friedrich G. Wilhelm Struve (1793–1864) at the Dorpat (now Tartu) Observatory.
