Abstract In 1958 the philosopher Gilbert Simondon published his book On the Mode of Existence of Technical Objects. Recently his work has been vividly discussed within cultural studies and media studies. Contrary to that, it has been rarely adopted within history of technology. The article reads Simondon from the angle of history of technology. It asks which potentials his work might offer for historians of technology. That implies the historical contextualisation of Simondonʼs work as well as the question of how studies within history of technology could benefi t from his concepts and ideas.
