This dissertation poses the question: "What was the impact of new technology on President Abraham Lincoln's military leadership during the Civil War?" It describes the new technology used during the Civil War, defines leadership, and then analyzes the impact of this new technology on the military leadership of President Lincoln. During the Civil War (1861-1865), President Lincoln faced a crisis of cataclysmic dimensions. Lincoln's leadership skills and abilities, as well as the technology present at the time, were elements essential to saving the Union. Technology affected the life, the thought process and the leadership capacity of Lincoln. I will explore how new technology affected President Lincoln's military leadership capacity and abilities, focusing primarily on his decision-making process and his mindset during the Civil War.
