Wine and Blood: Alcohol, Morale, and Discipline in the French Army on the Western Front, 1914-1918 , traces the history of the wine and spirits rations in the French army during the First World War. The ration--which consisted of about .0625 L of 100 proof spirits and .75 L of wine per man per day--was distributed in order to foster a fighting spirit, raise morale and generate courage before attacks, and create primary group identities among soldiers. This ration amounted to a strategic instrumentalization of drink as a tool of social and behavioral control. The dissertation investigates how and when the ration was officially adopted, what impact it had on military culture, command relations, and discipline, and the social rituals and cultural artifacts it generated. Wine and Blood makes three significant interventions in current literature about the First World War. The first is historical. The dissertation examines a largely understudied aspect of trench warfare: alcohol consumption. Second, the dissertation highlights the use of two methodological approaches underutilized by historians. It employs conclusions drawn from modern research in neurochemistry, molecular biology, and addiction studies as a framework for understanding human behavior. Additionally, through its use of statistics, it argues that humanities computing provides a useful, empirically-based adjunct to the methods of cultural history. Finally, Wine and Blood seeks to provide a new orientation to the extant historiography of the First World War. By avoiding the dominant paradigms in the field and proposing a new one--neurohistory--Wine and Blood seeks to move beyond these paradigm and the debates they generate, and provide a new way of looking at the conflict and modern warfare in general.
