It is argued that Eli Lilly's market strategy for Zyprexa in US primary care has significant implications for the meanings of symptoms, disease, and treatment. From this case study we can detect psychopharmaceutical markets in which non-psychiatric therapeutic treatments and the strategic restriction of demand are both more important than considered previously. Furthermore, the distinctions between chemical and social, psychiatric and non-psychiatric therapeutics are called into question, as is the conceptualization of the history of psychiatry, from morale therapy to contemporary outpatient treatment in primary care.
