Guillemet, Julien Won Woo (Author)
In my dissertation, Jeux de hasard et libertinage [Games of Chance and Libertinage], I examine two overlapping cultural trends in early modern France: on the one hand, the rise of libertinage and the libertine novel; on the other, the wide-spread social phenomenon of gambling. Focusing on the pervasive representations of games of chance in libertine narratives, I explore the way they forge a significant leitmotiv with broader ramifications pertaining to the main epistemological, ethical and aesthetic issues of the early modern period. Studying different writers, including Rabelais, Pascal, Dassoucy, Crébillon fils, Prévost, and Choderlos de Laclos, my dissertation combine literary analysis, philosophical inquiry, and the history of science, in order to think together three main aspects of early modern gambling: the emergence of the mathematical theories of probability and decision making; the juridical, theological and philosophical approaches to the concept and practices of play; and the aesthetic use of gaming motives in literary works. I demonstrate that games of chance became a key-metaphor in libertine novels, which illustrates important debates in the history of science and ideas, mainly three important aspects: the idea of chance, fatality and providence; the concept of the rule of the game and legal contract; and the notion of pleasure, passion, and addiction.
