An Intolerable Affliction: A History of Lupus Vulgaris in Late Nineteenth- and Early Twentieth-Century Britain (cited 2010)

unapi

This thesis will present the histories of a `forgotten¿ disease ¿ lupus vulgaris ¿ and a `forgotten¿ therapy ¿ localised UV light treatment, especially the Finsen lamp. Lupus vulgaris, a severely disfiguring skin disease, identified as a cutaneous form of tuberculosis in 1884, stimulated great medical and public concern in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries but has virtually disappeared from histories of medicine, even those of tuberculosis itself. Of many treatments attempted the most effective, prior to the development of drug treatments in the 1940s, was the Finsen lamp, a localised UV light which won the 1903 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for its inventor, Niels Ryberg Finsen. Much like lupus vulgaris, the Finsen lamp is largely absent from histories, despite considerable interest from Finsen¿s contemporaries. The thesis recovers these histories to demonstrate their social and medical significance in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and how they speak to bigger issues in the history of medicine, such as the reception of germ theory and the development and acceptance of other medical technologies such as the X-ray.
