The investigation consists of a complete study of the Alfonso Carlos, a military field hospital that was active in Pamplona during the Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939. We have combined historical and sociological techniques for the study and have used three sources: documentary, graphical and verbal. This medical centre opened in October 1936, within the building that housed Pamplona's Seminary, to attend to convalescing requet6s (voluntary Carlists militiamen) from Navarre. The hospital staff was made up of voluntary workers connected to the Carlist movement and the popular donations received were of vital importance to its financing. Eventually, the hospital had up to 1,450 beds destined for all kinds of soldiers, and it organized specialized services; one particularly noteworthy service being rehabilitation assistance for the aftereffects of the war. The hospital's female staff attained a notable degree of responsibility and autonomy that enabled them to train and to join the medical world professionally. The use of Carlist symbols inside the hospital, the origins of the staff and the particular creation of religious and cultural assistance for the injured gave the Alfonso Carlos a singular identity amongst the other war hospitals in Navarre, a distinction that has lasted through time. Its history reflects how a significant part of Navarre's society perceived and lived during these times of struggle
