Nuvolari, Alessandro (Author)
This book examines the process through which steam power first emerged and then grew into a major industrial technology over a period going approximately from the early eighteenth century to the middle of the nineteenth century. The book traces in detail the evolution of the technology paying particular attention to the influence of the different economic and institutional contexts. The reconstruction of the history of steam engine technology is carried out by means of analytical tools that reflect some of the most recent developments in the economics of technical change. Besides providing an account of the formative period of a technology that constituted a critical foundation for the industrialization of western economies, the book illuminates a number of wider issues concerning the nature of innovation and economic change during the British Industrial Revolution.
