Sign processes permeate both the internal organization as well as the external interactions of every living being. Irreducible to deterministic mechanism, these intrinsically semiotic processes are critical to the micro-choreographed practices of human communicative interaction, to the symbiotic and opportunistic activities of animals, and to the life-sustaining information exchange taking place ceaselessly across the vast intercellular networks of activity that maintain each biological being in animate existence. Biosemiotics is the project of an ever-growing coterie of philosophers, anthropologists, systems theorists, ethologists, and sociologists who are dedicated to articulating a non-reductionist expansion of the classical scientific paradigm that can coherently account for the altogether natural constructivism of a perpetually agent-built environment of meaning that is irreducibly relational, consequentially acted upon and interactionally accomplished and sustained. Because the definitive history of this nascent interdiscipline has not yet been written, the dissertation draws a conceptual history of the fundamental principles underlying biosemiotics, including philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce's (1839-1914) semiotic logic of relations, animal ethologist Jacob von Uexküll's (1864-1944) constructivist biology of perception, and physicist and chemist Ilya Prigogine's (1917-2003) explication of self-organizing systems as decentralized accomplishments. Having explicated the biosemiotic framework, the dissertation then attempts to move this emerging interdiscipline one step beyond its current purview by synthesizing into its developing perspective current anthropological work being done under the aegis of Ethnomethodology/Conversation Analysis and to synthesize the findings of these two congruent research projects into a unified explanation of the role of sign-relations in the naturalistic accomplishments of meaning and mind.
