Verbruggen, Jan Adrianus (Author)
The first attempts at introduction of steam power in Holland in the second half of the 18th century are marked by the activities and sponsorship of the Rotterdam scholarly society "Bataafsch Genootschap" (Batavian Society) and their contacts with the Birmingham firm of Boulton & Watt. The core of these contacts is the correspondence between James Watt and Jan Daniel Huichelbos van Liender from c.1769 to 1809. Most of this correspondence survives, and an almost complete reconstruction with transcripts of all c.350 letters and a few other documents forms the nucleus of this dissertation. An introductory essay tells the story of the successes and failures in a more interpretive and analytical way, and places the documents in a historical context. Other steam power activities in Holland are described, and links of these with the Rotterdam activities are explored. An additional section compiles the biographical notes on Van Liender found in various sources--not enough to paint a complete biography of the man, but vastly more than hitherto brought together.
