Object of the present dissertation is the reception of Aristotle's _ Metaphysics_ in the _Kitb al-Šif', Book of the Cure_, by Avicenna (Ibn Sin, d. 1037 C.E.)---one of the greatest exponents of Arabic philosophy---with particular regard to the section entitled _Ilhiyyt_, [_ Science of_] _Divine Things_. The _Kitb al- Šif'_ is the most important and influential philosophical work of Avicenna and the _Ilhiyyt_ its section dealing with metaphysics. Even though the _Ilhiyyt_ is not a commentary on Aristotle's _Metaphysics_, but rather a personal elaboration by Avicenna, it was intended by its author, just as was the entire _Kitb al-Šif'_, to belong to the Aristotelian tradition; consequently, it contains several texts and doctrines taken from Aristotle's _Metaphysics_. The purpose of the dissertation is to give a general account of the dependence of Avicenna's _ Ilhiyyt_ upon Aristotle's _Metaphysics_. This is accomplished in three ways: by offering an inventory of the passages of the _Metaphysics_ Avicenna selected in order to be used in the _Ilhiyyt_; by classifying the different modes (literal quotations, paraphrases, doctrinal similarities etc.) in which he reproduced these Aristotelian passages, and their various degrees of closeness to the original; and finally, by sketching an overall outline of the new configuration---both textual and doctrinal---Aristotle's _Metaphysics_ assumed in Avicenna's work. The dissertation provides for the first time a detailed analysis of the transmission and reception in the Arab world of Aristotle's most influential work.
