The latest and now standard edition of Themistius' paraphrase of Aristotle's _ de Anima_ was published by R. Heinze in 1899. This edition has been the basis of all translations and scholarly discussions of the paraphrase since its appearance. In this edition Heinze mentions 29 manuscripts, although he only makes use of a fraction of these. He particularly relied on three, _ P_ (Parisinus Coislinianus 386, 11th century), _Q_ (Laurentianus 87.25, 13th century), and _C_ (Parisinus graecus 1888, 15th century). A new edition of the paraphrase is needed. Since the publication of Heinze's edition new manuscripts have come to light. R. Todd has compiled an inventory of the manuscripts of Themistius' paraphrase and lists eleven manuscripts which Heinze did not know. The relationship between these manuscripts and those of Heinze has not yet been analyzed. Another important textual development since Heinze is the discovery and analysis of an Arabic manuscript of the paraphrase that is based on an early 10th century translation by Is;q ibn ;unain. The editor of this manuscript, M. C. Lyons, observed that the Greek text upon which Is;q based his translation represents no currently known branch of the Greek manuscript tradition. However, this branch seems to have been earlier and---in many instances---more accurate than that tradition represented by the extant Greek manuscripts. Providing a new edition of Themistius' paraphrase of the _de Anima _ is my ultimate objective. However, given the limited scope of a dissertation, I have restricted myself to an examination of only a portion of the paraphrase. The segment of the text under consideration, 3.4--3.8, is that which deals with Aristotle's discussion of _noesis_. Besides being of a length suitable to the scope of a dissertation, this passage has been the focus of a significant amount of recent research. Therefore, an improved text of this section provides a significant and timely contribution to scholarship.
