In this dissertation I examine the life of Suzanne Noël (1878-1954) who was both a feminist and a cosmetic surgeon. Although it may appear that a combined representation of both the beliefs of a modern French feminist and that of a pioneer and innovator of cosmetic surgical procedures are diametrically challenging, in reality they were both embodied and exemplified by Noël. This dissertation places Dr. Suzanne de Noël in the history of plastic surgery as an innovator, promoter, and popularizer. Her life is set within the context of a beauty culture as it was formulated in early twentieth century France and within the context that was understood as the "New Woman" who was not only the image of energetic beauty, intellectual competency, but who gregariously took new liberties within the social arena. This dissertation is organized into six chapters. In chapters one and two I examine the bibliography of Noël and her place in the historiography of the History of Medicine. Chapter three is an analysis of her work in regard to the Soroptimist International which she helped found. In chapter four I develop a correlation between the rise of a beauty culture in France and the effect that culture had on Noël and her profession as a cosmetic surgeon. In chapter five I explore Noël's discourse through her cosmetic surgical publications and text. In chapter six I surmise that it was in part her gender that helped make Noël one of the most notable cosmetic surgeons in the world during her time. I argue that the feminist movement in France at the turn of the century had a direct impact on her view that economic independence was one of the most valuable assets a woman could have. She believed that in her role as a plastic surgeon she helped women attain and retain that independence.
