This work is the first critical edition of the I, an anonymous medieval glossary about medical-botanics original form Salerno. In the second half of the XIXth century, this glossary was pro manuscript edited by Salvatore de Renzi and J.L.G. Mowat. Now we present the first critical edition that considers all the textual tradition, including the research on sixty five manuscripts that transmitted total or partially the text of the glossary. This deep analysis has revealed a really important fact: there are two different versions of the glossary. The existence of this double version has allowed us to analyse the evolution and development of the glossary from its original form with a simple and ancient text to the modern manuscripts that show much more complex structural organization and contents. We present thus a new edition of the Alphita where both versions are distinguished and where the reader can follow the evolution of the piece. This critical edition of the Alphita is enriched with detailed comment of all its entries. We have studied the morphologic, phonetic and graphic deformations observed in the terms found in the glossary along the historical transmission, we have studied the etymologies given by the glossary in the different cases, we have researched and localized the textual sources and we have identified the simple medical components, how they were treated in the most important salernitan writings on medical-botanics and how they affected the subsequent glossaries and lexicons. The editions includes a previous study where the Alphita glossary is deeply analysed, paying special attention to the sources, period of time and place of origin, contents, language and relevance in the medieval lexicography. The work is concluded with an index where all the glossary terms are registered and with a detailed bibliography.
