L'originalité de Poincaré en mécanique céleste: pratique des solutions périodiques dans un réseau de textes (2015)

unapi

We study the originality of Henri Poincaré's approach to celestial mechanics and its reception by specialists at the time. The method of networks of texts enables us to map out a practice of periodic solutions that circulated among articles written by authors of different nationalities, working in distinct institutions and publishing in various journals. Reading the texts in detail, we focus our analysis on a smaller scale and identify some effects of Poincaré's suggestions long before the birth of the theory of dynamical systems. In particular, men like George Hill and George Darwin become especially important to understand how Poincaré's propositions were appropriated. Our conclusions lead to a fresh discussion of the originality and the reception of an author's ideas in the history of mathematics.
