Between the 1880s and 1930s, not only the sport as a mass cultural phenomenon of modernity, but also the specific sports facilities and sports-related functional buildings, as we know it today is essentially established. Noyan Dinçkal takes the sport as a spatial event in the view. His study shows how one part sport was determined by spatial conditions, but on the other hand, how much sport has been able to define space, in physical-material, symbolic and social terms. How were sports spaces spawned what functions they fulfilled, the contexts in which they were used and provided with what meanings? Dinçkal shows that compacted in sports premises central social, cultural and political processes of classic modernism like under a magnifying glass. On the one hand it comes to the question of how and why written around the turn of the century clearly defined places and defined by specific social practices spaces, whose main function was the practice of sports. On the other hand, the investigation shows that occurred in sports spaces far more than sport: In them is manifested new forms of representative mass public, they were important places in the political festival culture, they served the consumer and social self-understanding, in them also showed the increasing regulation by expressions of life through standards and techniques of scientific experts. The spaciousness of the sport has been found in the Historical Sciences scant attention. Accordingly, this book also sees itself as a contribution to integrate the space factor in the historical perspective on sport and mass culture.
