In the late nineteenth century through the scientific study of spiritualistic phenomena, new medical and psychological approaches were applied to mediumship. The idea of the medium spiritualist was replaced by the notion of the medium as an unbalanced being able to emanate unconscious psychic forces. This paper analyzes the redefinition of mediumship through some controversial articles of the Catalan doctor Victor Melcior. This microhistory Sir -You see, on the one hand, to place the local debate in the international scientific context and thus show relationships between spiritualism, medicine and psychopathology of time. By Moreover, to analyze the reactions of some spiritualists to Melcior theories and as the consequences that this debate had to spiritualism in general.
